Godfather Approach

Godfather Approach

This approach puts two people in contact who have a point in common and who have a personal interest in exchanging with each other. The role of the moderator consists in setting up the conditions which encourage them to exchange as freely as possible, without the moderator stepping in. As an example, it could be a recently diagnosed patient and someone diagnosed a longer time ago. In this case, each one makes a projection according to his position. The patient diagnosed first adopts the position of godfather concerning the newly diagnosed patient. These approaches can also bring two clinicians face to face.

A variation of this approach consists in voluntarily bringing together two sub-groups of populations with opposite views on a subject. This is known as a fight group. The aim is to generate opinions starting with a precise subject of disagreement (a therapeutic approach for example).

Such method highlights each respondent’s way of thinking. Their motivation is clearer when it is presented to defend their point of view.
