The MarkeTech Group has conducted a technical and operational study during a year on the potential use of bacteriophages for CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear) defense. This large-scale project has been managed by the Centre d’Analyse Technico-Opérationnelle de Défense (CATOD) on behalf of the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) and the Service de Santé des Armées (SSA) of the French Ministry of Defense. In-depth interviews with clinical, academic and industrial key opinion leaders at the global level and a detailed analysis of the existing international literature have been performed to describe the current and potential uses of bacteriophages for detection (diagnosis, biological identification) and treatment (therapy, prophylaxis, decontamination) purposes in case of natural, accidental or induced bacterial infections. The results presented - deemed clear and didactic - provide the keys to understanding and the actions to be taken for a potential use of bacteriophages in the context of biodefense.
